Can you share a bit about your background with us?
I am Hope Egbe-Edwards, the Channel Head for Life TV Africa and Spice TV Africa. My academic background includes a degree in History and International Relations from Lagos State University, followed by a filmmaking course at the Del York Academy, an offshore branch of the New York Film Academy.

In 2013, I attended the World International Leadership Conference in South Korea, a significant milestone in my leadership development. I also hold a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy. Recently, I completed a beginner course in the Korean language. With over 12 years of experience in the media industry, my expertise encompasses editing, producing, brand strategy, partnerships, sponsorships, and live broadcasting.

Your career spans over a decade in the media industry, holding leadership roles across prominent networks. What inspired you to pursue a career in media?
My career in the media industry was ignited by a passion for storytelling and a commitment to informing, educating, and inspiring audiences. From a young age, I was captivated by the media’s ability to shape perceptions and drive positive change. My late mother’s encouragement was instrumental in fostering this interest. She inspired me to join the media team at our church, where I was the lone female member. This early exposure fueled my ambition and led me to pursue video editing at Pefil Academy in 2009, setting the stage for a lifelong career in media.

Your current role as Head of SPICE TV Africa and LIFE TV Africa is quite demanding, how do you balance the demands of overseeing these two distinct channels, each with its own unique audience and focus
Balancing the management of SPICE TV Africa and LIFE TV Africa requires strategic prioritization and a clear understanding of each channel’s unique identity and target audience. SPICE TV, a well-established channel focused on fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and entertainment, benefits from a proven content format that I adapt to stay current with evolving trends.

In contrast, LIFE TV, a faith-based Christian channel launched in 2021, presented a unique challenge as it required building a content library from scratch. In 2022, we expanded LIFE TV’s reach by launching terrestrial broadcasting.

Each channel is supported by a dedicated team, including producers, camera crews, and marketing staff. To ensure seamless operations, I coordinate schedules to avoid conflicts between major productions for SPICE TV and LIFE TV.

Tell us more about the vision behind Hlink Films. How did founding your own agency align with the goals and passion you have for media and content creation?
Hlink Films was founded on my passion for creating exceptional broadcast solutions. Having worked on numerous large-scale productions, including concerts, awards shows, festivals, and reality shows, I identified a need for higher production standards. Hlink Films was my response to this gap.

Establishing my own agency allowed me the creative freedom to pursue projects that align with my values and vision. At Hlink Films, we are committed to producing extraordinary work that challenges conventions and captivates audiences. Our cinematography is visually stunning, and our storytelling is thought-provoking.

Hlink Films has brought together a talented team of individuals who share my passion for media. Together, we strive for innovation, push boundaries, and inspire. Each project represents an opportunity to make a lasting impact, tell compelling stories, and leave a significant mark on the media landscape.

Given your extensive experience as a producer, editor, brand strategist, and live broadcast coordinator, how have these roles shaped your approach to managing your creative team?
My career began as a video editor, providing me with a solid foundation in storytelling and visual composition. As an editor, I developed a keen eye for detail, identifying and addressing potential issues that often go unnoticed by directors and cinematographers during production. This experience proved invaluable as I transitioned into producing. By anticipating post-production challenges, I ensured that the footage captured would seamlessly integrate into the final product, elevating the overall quality of my productions.

Furthermore, my involvement in live broadcasts and show calling honed my ability to manage teams in real time. I possess a deep understanding of potential pitfalls and proactively address them to ensure smooth execution, both on set and in the control room.

The combined experience from these roles has shaped my approach to team management. I possess a comprehensive understanding of the creative process, enabling me to anticipate and resolve issues before they impact production.

Having led high-profile productions, what do you consider the most challenging and rewarding aspects of coordinating live and large-scale events?
Coordinating large-scale live events presents a unique set of challenges and rewards. One of the primary challenges is managing client expectations, particularly when their vision exceeds budgetary constraints. Additionally, unforeseen circumstances and time constraints often present significant obstacles. I vividly recall the Rema live performance in Benin, an event with a massive crowd eagerly anticipating the show. Despite meticulous planning, we faced a major setback: relentless rain from 8am to 6pm with the event scheduled from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. As the show caller, I was responsible for managing the chaos and ensuring the show’s success, even in the face of adverse weather conditions.

The most rewarding aspect of such events is witnessing the culmination of hard work and dedication, and the audience’s enjoyment, regardless of the challenges encountered.

In your experience, Are there specific elements you prioritize to create impactful content that resonates with the audience?
To create impactful content, I prioritize audience understanding. By identifying their needs and preferences, I ensure that the content is relevant and engaging. Crafting compelling narratives that evoke emotions fosters a deeper connection with the audience. Consistency in tone, style, and messaging is crucial, and clear calls to action encourage audience interaction.

As a seasoned media executive, what advice would you offer to aspiring professionals looking to make their mark in content creation and media management?
To build a successful career in media production, I will focus on developing a strong portfolio, understanding audience needs, adapting to industry trends, and mastering both creative and technical skills. Networking is crucial. Attending industry events and collaborating with peers can open doors to new opportunities. Seeking mentorship from experienced professionals can provide invaluable guidance. It’s important to prioritize experience over immediate financial rewards. Volunteering and internships in television production and broadcasting offer valuable opportunities to hone skills and advance one’s career.
