Having struggled with severe acne in her adolescent years, Mimi Whyte Femi threw herself into extensive research to help cure her symptoms. Through this process, a passion for skincare was born. When your skin is compromised, it can negatively affect how you view yourself and, ultimately, how you show up in the world. In the same breath, when your skin is well taken care of, it can have the opposite effect. Understanding this dynamic contributed to the inevitable success of this passion project.

Before deciding to follow her dream of becoming an acclaimed skin therapist, Mimi Whyte Femi completed her bachelor’s degree in economics. This chapter eventually contributed to where she is today as a successful businesswoman. Her educational background and experience are crucial when determining customized treatment plans and products for her customers and patients.

Earning several certificates and having completed various training programmes from the best institutes around the world within the industry including Organic Skin Therapy, Skincare and Beauty Therapy, Aesthetic Therapy, and Laser Technology positions, Mimi Whyte Femi is in a league of her own. Since launching her business in 2012, she has established herself as a brand and leader in the skincare and beauty industry in Nigeria. With all her years of experience over the years, she has been able to establish factories in different parts of the world that produce organic skin care products for all skin issues and needs, as well as for all skin types. Tell us about your background and experience in the beauty industry.
I am Mimi Whyte Femi, the head/lead advanced aesthetician, laser technician, skin therapist, and owner / CEO of Skin Therapy Beauty and Spa. My skincare journey began with a personal struggle with severe acne during my teenage years, which I managed to cure through extensive research and self-treatment. This experience ignited my passion for skincare and led to the creation of Skin Therapy Beauty and Spa, which now caters to all skin dilemmas, all skin needs, and all skin types. I established the business formally in 2012, after an unofficial start in 2009. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in Economics, which has helped me manage the business aspects of my spa. Today, we have three branches in Nigeria, located in Port Harcourt, Lagos, and Abuja.

How do you engage with your clients to share knowledge and expertise, empowering them to make informed decisions about their skincare routines?
I engage with my clients by offering personalized consultations where I explain their skin conditions and the treatments they will undergo. I develop customized skincare regimens and provide educational resources, such as workshops and informational materials, to ensure they understand how to care for their skin. This empowers my clients to make informed decisions about their skincare routines using our products and services.

I make regular educational videos on skincare hacks and tips. Also, we have highly trained and experienced SKIN therapists available whenever you walk into any of our locations, closely supervised by me to help recommend appropriate treatments and products.

What inspired you to start your own skin therapy beauty and spa business, and how does your journey influence the services and ethos of your establishment?
My inspiration came from my personal battle with severe acne, which I successfully managed through self-research and treatment. This transformative experience motivated me to help others with similar skin issues and beyond.

My main goal since establishing Skin Therapy Beauty and Spa has always been to boost confidence levels and change lives. We can comfortably say we’ve been able to achieve this for more than a million men and women from all over the globe, as our products ship worldwide. My journey has shaped the ethos of my spa, emphasizing personalized care, education, and a deep commitment to solving individual skincare problems with tailored solutions via our products and services.

How do you engage with your clients to share knowledge and expertise, empowering them to make informed decisions about their skincare routines?
I ensure clients are well-informed through detailed consultations and personalized advice. Each product or treatment service at our spa is tailored or customized to meet a target skin need or desire, which is communicated to every client by our expert therapist before treatment/purchase.

By educating them on their specific skin conditions, the benefits of their treatments, and the proper use of skin care products, I help them make informed decisions about their routines. Workshops and continuous support further empower them in their skincare journey.

As a founder and entrepreneur in the beauty industry, what challenges have you faced along the way, and how have you overcome them to build a successful business?
Building a brand from scratch, managing operations, and staying ahead of industry trends were significant challenges. I overcame these by continuously learning, obtaining certifications from prestigious institutes, and leveraging my economics degree for strategic decisions. My dedication to quality and innovation has been crucial in establishing a successful business. Most importantly, our loyalty and dedication to our clients by always providing them with the best in the world of skincare and aesthetics have kept us as one of the most trustworthy skincare brands in Africa and beyond.

Your spa likely caters to a diverse clientele. How do you ensure that your services are inclusive and accessible to people from all walks of life, regardless of age, gender, or background?
I ensure inclusivity by developing skincare solutions for all skin types and conditions. Customized treatment plans and products are designed to address diverse needs. We train our staff to provide inclusive services and maintain a welcoming environment for everyone, regardless of age, gender, or background.

All our spa branches are equipped with the world’s most advanced aesthetic machinery. Our well-trained and experienced staff, including skin therapists, are closely supervised by me to ensure clients receive the utmost in result-driven services and personalized recommendations at all times.

The beauty and wellness industry is constantly evolving. How do you stay updated on the latest trends and technologies, and how do you incorporate innovation into your spa’s offerings?
I stay updated by engaging in continuous research and attending advanced training programs. By integrating new techniques, state-of-the-art equipment, and the latest skincare products, I ensure our clients receive the most current and effective treatments. Innovation is a core part of our offerings, keeping us at the forefront of the industry.

What advice would you give to other women aspiring to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams in this field? My advice is to stay passionate and dedicated. Continuous learning and resilience are key to overcoming challenges. Be willing to innovate and adapt to industry changes. Build a strong foundation of knowledge and expertise, believe in your vision, and remain steadfast in your pursuit of success.

When it comes to skincare, I think the biggest mistake people in general make is that they do not understand the hard work it takes to make products that will keep users and clients coming back for more. The health and rich nature of the human skin is all that matters. Most people aren’t properly educated in the field of skincare and tend to “freestyle” a lot. That won’t cut it. Anyone who puts in the time and dedication will understand that skincare is big time and needs attention.

What are your aspirations for the future of your skin therapy beauty and spa? How do you envision continuing to make a positive impact on the lives of your clients and the community at large?
I aspire to expand the reach of Skin Therapy Beauty and Spa and continue setting new standards of excellence. My vision includes making a positive impact by providing high-quality skincare solutions and empowering clients with knowledge. We also engage in community outreach and educational programs, promoting overall wellness and skincare awareness. My goal is to maintain the trust and loyalty of our clients through exceptional service and innovative products. 

We recently introduced our advanced injectables, which include botox, fillers, and fat lipolysis treatments, needed by some clients as regular products and services are just not enough to get the job done. With this we can now achieve even more results and boost confidence, and as we always say at Skin Therapy Beauty and Spa, you can “be Beautifully you.”
