Can you tell us about your early life and what inspired you to choose the path of entrepreneurship over conventional employment?
Growing up, I was surrounded by family members who valued higher education, particularly obtaining an MBA. However, during my university years, I realised that my aspirations aligned more with entrepreneurship than a conventional career path.
At 23, I set up my first business, Anne Jacobs, choosing fashion school over pursuing an MBA. I often asked myself, “Why contribute to building someone else’s empire when I can create my own?” – a statement that continues to be my guiding philosophy.
There’s a common conception of firstborn daughters and the challenges, burdens, and high pedestal they are usually placed on. Was this your experience and as the eldest daughter in a family of seven, how has your family influenced your entrepreneurial journey?
As the eldest daughter in a family of seven, I embraced the position of a role model for my younger siblings. The responsibility of being their inspiration meant that giving up or failing was simply not an option. The fact that my younger siblings looked up to me fuelled my determination to persevere, even in the face of adversity. My family’s unwavering support has been a cornerstone of my entrepreneurial journey, providing encouragement and guidance when business challenges became overwhelming.
How did your education in Business Economics at Baze University shape your approach to business and entrepreneurship?
My education at Baze University was instrumental in developing the discipline that underpins my approach to business and entrepreneurship. Launching Anne Jacobs at the age of 23, I quickly realised that discipline was essential for growth and expansion into new ventures. The rigorous curriculum and training at the university instilled in me a strong sense of financial discipline. This was crucial as Anne Jacobs evolved into a family of businesses, including the TAJ Restaurant|Bar, TAJ Bistro, TAJ Metro Mart, and the upcoming TAJ Cafe. Beyond financial management, my time at Baze University sharpened my focus and determination, which has been crucial in navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship and achieving my business goals.
What do you consider the most significant milestones in your entrepreneurial journey, and how have they shaped your leadership style?
Founding Anne Jacobs has been the most significant milestone in my entrepreneurial journey. This achievement proved to me that with determination, no goal is beyond reach. The experience of establishing Anne Jacobs has transformed me into a hands-on leader who is deeply engaged in all aspects of my business. From the onset, I sought further education to design and curate timeless pieces effectively.
Whether developing recipes and training chefs at my restaurants or managing operations at my mart, I lead by example. This, in turn, inspires my team to persevere, as they see me actively involved in the work. I desire to be an inspirational leader, a figure my family, friends, staff, and colleagues admire when they see my dedication and hard work.
TAJ is a reputable establishment with a plethora of excellent reviews. What inspired you to venture into the culinary world, and how do you maintain high standards across all your establishments?
I have always aspired to own a restaurant, but at 23, I felt that I was too young to navigate the discipline, standards, and requirements necessary to start one. That is why I initially ventured into fashion with Anne Jacobs, a field I was also passionate about. I set my sights on opening a restaurant by the age of 30, believing that the experience and discipline gained from running a fashion business would prepare me for future challenges. True to my plan, I began working on the restaurant, which became a success just two months after my 30th birthday.
To maintain high standards across all my establishments, I ensure a strong presence and stay actively involved in day-to-day operations whilst upholding close communication with my staff. This hands-on approach allows me to uphold the quality and consistency that TAJ is known for.
You’ve mentioned that setbacks are opportunities for growth. Can you share a specific instance where this mindset helped you turn a challenge into a success?
While establishing the TAJ Restaurant|Bar in Lagos, Nigeria, I encountered considerable challenges due to the unfamiliar terrain compared to Abuja. A few months before the planned launch, the site was closed unexpectedly for two months, and the six-bedroom staff quarters were demolished. This resulted in financial loss, time, and value, which could not be recovered. Because of this, the intended opening of the restaurant in December 2022 was not possible, and instead, it launched on the first of February 2023.
Throughout the process, I remained patient and embraced the belief that this setback might be a blessing in disguise. It could have spared us from potential issues that may have arisen if we had opened in December. When we did finally launch in February, everything ran smoothly, and the success of the opening affirmed my belief that setbacks can indeed be opportunities for growth and resilience.
Your businesses have grown organically. What two strategic insights or innovative practices would you say were most crucial to achieving this success?
Two key insights have been crucial to our organic growth: a focus on personal development and a commitment to food quality and service. I prioritise honing my skills and perfecting recipes, treating myself as the primary competition rather than comparing myself to others. This mindset fosters constant growth and innovation within my businesses.
Moreover, maintaining high standards in both food quality and the overall customer experience has been essential. While public relations can spark initial interest, it is the consistent excellence in our offerings and service that sustains customer loyalty. Exceptional food brings customers back, and this is the strong cornerstone that has driven our organic growth.
How do you approach leadership within your various ventures, and what steps do you take to foster an inclusive environment for your team?
My intentional approach to leadership prioritises open communication while actively seeking feedback from my staff. Recognising their integral role in the success of the business, I make a concerted effort to listen to their ideas and remain receptive to compromise.
Additionally, I work towards being both a mentor and a friend to my team. By serving as a leader and role model who inspires and guides, I encourage team members to embrace opportunities for learning and growth. Building relationships where both leadership and team members feel respected and valued encourages continuous development.
By nurturing this supportive environment, I ensure that my team operates at its best, cultivating a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.
Looking to the future, what legacy do you wish to leave behind as an entrepreneur and thought leader in Nigeria’s fashion, hospitality, and retail sectors?
My vision of the future is to leave a legacy of lasting excellence and innovation. My primary goal is to ensure that my businesses not only thrive but also set a benchmark for sustainability and client satisfaction.
For me, true success is not measured by financial gain, but rather by the joy and fulfillment I bring to my clients. I am dedicated to upholding the highest standards and consistently exceeding expectations. The legacy I wish to leave is one of dedication to quality, where my ventures are celebrated not just for their achievements, but for the positive impact they have on the lives of those we serve.
