Her focus on sustainability and craftsmanship allows Kwelaku to produce timeless collections that honor cultural heritage while being environmentally responsible.
Victoria Anosike‘s vision is to create elegant, functional clothing that transcends trends and remains rooted in the stories of her heritage.
Can you share your journey as a founder of Kwelaku and how your background has shaped your vision for the brand?
As a Nigerian fashion designer, my journey into fashion was deeply influenced by my upbringing and the rich cultural heritage that surrounded me. Growing up, I was always captivated by the vibrancy of the bold prints worn by most women at the time; prints like Ankara, Kente, and so on. These fabrics were mostly tailored into what we referred to as ‘Trad’ growing up. Think of a compendium of blouses, skirts, and wrappers with bold details. However oftentimes, these attire were mostly ever reserved for attending Church on Sundays, weddings, and other ceremonial events. I found out that they were an expression of identity, history, and tradition for these women.
When I founded Kwelaku, my goal was to create more than just clothing, I wanted to bring these stories to life in a way that resonates with modern women while preserving the authenticity of our culture. Today, Kwelaku takes pride in its use of indigenous prints and silhouettes to create pieces that are both functional and forever. Hence, our pieces are not only aesthetically striking but also functional and timeless, thereby seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary design.
I have also made it a point to ensure that every Kwelaku piece offers elegance without sacrificing comfort; hence, Kwelaku is the perfect choice for women who seek to look their best in indigenous clothing without compromising on comfort. This philosophy of blending form and function became a core pillar of the brand. Whether it’s a bold indigo print or a subtle detail inspired by our heritage, each piece is designed to transcend trends and seasons.
What inspired you to transition from banking to fashion, and how did your experiences in the banking sector influence your approach to running Kwelaku?
Making the transition from banking to fashion was a significant shift, but it was one driven by passion. My love for fashion had always been there, but after spending years in the structured world of finance, I realized I wanted to channel my creativity in a way that felt more personal and fulfilling.
The experiences I gained in banking have been incredibly valuable in running Kwelaku. The financial discipline, strategic planning, attention to detail, and ability to work under pressure that I developed in the banking sector helped me approach fashion with a strong business mindset. Whether it’s managing cash flow, budgeting for collections, or navigating the logistics of production, my background in finance ensures that the creative side of the business is backed by a solid foundation.
I also learned the importance of building strong relationships and maintaining trust, whether with clients or collaborators. This has translated into creating a brand ethos for Kwelaku that is customer-centric and built on lasting connections. I always say it is better to do everything possible to retain already acquired customers than always having to be on the hunt for new ones. Beyond offering high-quality clothing, we strive to give our women a luxury brand experience, from a tailored online and in-store experience to exceptional customer service.
Can you elaborate on the journey of creating Kwelaku’s fabrics from scratch and the significance of this process in sustainable fashion?
Creating Kwelaku’s fabrics from scratch has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of building the brand. It’s a process rooted in intentionality—starting from the raw materials and extending through to the final product, ensuring that each piece tells a unique story. By working directly with local artisans and textile producers, we are not only able to incorporate indigenous prints and traditional techniques but also maintain control over the sustainability of the production process.
Additionally, working directly with artisans ensures fair labor practices, which aligns with Kwelaku’s commitment to ethical fashion. The fact that the textile producers we partner with can earn a decent living whilst doing what they truly love is a blessing and a source of motivation to keep doing what we do.
This approach to fabric production also plays a key role in reducing waste. By creating custom fabrics, we can tailor the production process to meet the specific needs of each collection, minimizing excess material. It’s a practice that not only aligns with sustainability but also ensures that every piece we produce is made with purpose and precision.
In a broader sense, creating our fabrics is about reclaiming ownership of the design process, and it’s a nod to the traditional craftsmanship that has been part of Nigerian culture for generations. It allows Kwelaku to produce timeless pieces that are not only aesthetically beautiful but also contribute to a more sustainable fashion future.
As a mother and a business owner, how do you balance your family life with the demands of running a fashion brand?
Balancing family life with the demands of running a fashion brand is definitely a challenge, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I’ve found that the key lies in prioritizing, building systems that work both at home and work, and being intentional with my time. I set clear boundaries between work and family, dedicating specific hours to each so I can be fully present in both roles.
As a mother, my family is my biggest inspiration, and they motivate me to keep going, even when things get tough. Running a business requires flexibility, so I’ve learned to delegate when needed and trust my team, which allows me to be there for my family without compromising the quality and growth of Kwelaku.
Ultimately, it’s about recognizing that while it’s not always perfect, finding balance is a continuous process. I take it one day at a time, staying organized and leaning on my support system whenever necessary. I really am nothing without my team.

In your opinion, what makes Kwelaku unique in the fashion landscape, and how do you differentiate it from other brands?
The combination of heritage, craftsmanship, and sustainability creates a unique identity that allows us to stand out while staying true to our roots as reflected in both our prints and silhouettes. In a market where fast fashion often dominates, Kwelaku’s designs, though aesthetically pleasing, still embody a perfect blend of style and functionality, resulting in forever pieces that can withstand the test of time in terms of both style and durability.
Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring fashion entrepreneurs looking to build their brands, especially those who are passionate about sustainability and ethical fashion?
For aspiring fashion entrepreneurs, especially those passionate about sustainability and ethical fashion, my advice would be:
Start Small but Dream Big: You don’t need to have everything figured out from the start. Start with small collections, test the market, and refine as you go. As long as you stay committed to your values and have a vision for growth, your brand will evolve.
Balance Creativity and Business Acumen: Fashion is an art form, but it’s also a business. Learn the financial and operational aspects of running a brand. Budgeting, marketing, and understanding supply chain logistics are just as important as design.
Stay True to Your Vision: It’s important to have a clear idea of what you want your brand to represent. In a world where trends come and go, your core values—whether that’s sustainability, cultural heritage, or ethical production—should remain the backbone of your brand.
Embrace Slow Growth: Building a sustainable and ethical brand takes time. Resist the pressure to scale quickly if it means compromising your principles. Focus on quality, building relationships with ethical suppliers, and creating products that last. The demand for thoughtful fashion is growing, and customers will appreciate your authenticity.
