Chimsom, can you share with us a little bit about your background and what inspired you to pursue public relations as a career path?
My journey into public relations began in Nigeria, where my curiosity about the power of communication and the role of information in shaping society took root. This passion initially led me to pursue a Bachelor of Law, where I developed critical thinking, research, and analytical skills. While I valued the precision and rigor of legal practice, I discovered my true passion lay in storytelling specifically, in the art of shaping narratives to inspire, inform, and influence.
The dynamic nature of public relations offered the perfect blend of strategy, creativity, and advocacy. It was a space where I could harness my communication skills to build meaningful relationships, shape public perception, and champion causes that drive positive change. Motivated by this passion, I expanded my academic foundation with a Master of Law in Trade and Admiralty, refining my expertise in research and complex problem-solving. I then decided to pursue a Master of Science in Global Studies and International Relations at Northeastern University, broadening my global perspective and deepening my understanding of international communication strategies.
Professionally, I have had the privilege of working across diverse industries, including legal services and the non-profit sector. My role as a Public Relations Officer at United Capital Plc was particularly impactful. There, I led strategic initiatives, managed programs from inception to execution, and crafted messaging that resonated with diverse audiences. This experience solidified my passion for using communication to foster connection, trust, and engagement between organizations and their stakeholders.
Ultimately, I am driven by a desire to contribute to a more informed, connected, and inspired world one story at a time.
Given your academic background in law from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Swansea University, what inspired you to pursue a Master of Science degree at Northeastern University, and how have all your degrees collectively enhanced your capabilities in public relations?
My legal education at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and Swansea University laid a solid foundation in critical thinking, analysis, and persuasive communication. However, my decision to pursue a Master of Science in Global Studies and International Relations at Northeastern University was driven by a desire to bridge the gap between legal frameworks and their impact on global issues. I was particularly intrigued by the intersection of international law, policy, and public perception. Specifically, how strategic communication shapes public understanding and influences global discourse.
Law school sharpened my ability to analyze complex information, identify key issues, and construct persuasive arguments. These skills are invaluable in public relations, where crafting clear, compelling narratives and evaluating multifaceted situations are essential. My experience in legal research and writing equipped me to distill complex concepts into concise, impactful messaging an asset when developing press releases, reports, and other communication materials.
Ethical integrity is a cornerstone of the legal profession, and it informs my approach to public relations. I prioritize transparency, fairness, and accountability in all communication efforts, ensuring alignment with ethical standards. Additionally, my advocacy training in law has translated seamlessly into public relations, where I advocate for my clients’ brands and create resonant, strategic narratives for target audiences.
My Master of Law in Trade and Admiralty provided specialized knowledge of international trade and maritime law, enhancing my understanding of global regulatory systems and economic frameworks. This expertise enables me to analyze complex legal and political issues and communicate their implications effectively to diverse stakeholders.
At Northeastern University, my MSc in Global Studies and International Relations will expand my perspective on global affairs, including international relations theory, political economy, and global institutions. This broader worldview enriches my ability to develop culturally sensitive, globally relevant communication strategies that navigate the complexities of public perception across borders. Together, these academic experiences have equipped me with a unique blend of analytical rigor, strategic insight, and ethical leadership key elements for success in the dynamic field of public relations.
With over four years of experience in public relations, what are some key lessons you’ve learned about developing successful communication strategies?
Throughout my four years of experience in public relations, I’ve learned that successful communication strategies are built on clear objectives, a deep understanding of the target audience, and adaptability to a dynamic media landscape.
One of the most common challenges is the lack of well-defined goals. Without clear, measurable objectives, it’s difficult to assess the effectiveness of a campaign. I’ve found that investing time upfront to establish SMART goals Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound lays the foundation for success. Similarly, understanding your audience is critical. Conducting thorough audience research to uncover their values, concerns, and communication preferences enables you to craft messages that resonate. Using storytelling techniques can make content more engaging and memorable, ensuring that key messages leave a lasting impact.
The ever-evolving nature of communication channels presents another challenge. Choosing the right platforms requires careful analysis of audience behavior to determine where they spend their time. A multi-channel approach, paired with consistent messaging across platforms, maximizes reach and impact.
Measuring campaign success can be complex, but establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) and using data analytics tools allows for effective tracking of website traffic, social media engagement, media coverage, and other relevant metrics. Data-driven insights inform adjustments and optimize future strategies.
Additionally, the public relations landscape is continuously changing with new technologies and trends. Staying informed and being ready to adapt is essential to maintaining relevance and effectiveness.
Strong stakeholder relationships are a cornerstone of successful PR. Building trust and transparency in all communications and engaging in proactive outreach foster positive connections with media, influencers, and customers.
Finally, crises are inevitable, but preparation makes all the difference. A well-structured crisis communication plan that outlines roles, responsibilities, and clear communication protocols ensures swift, effective responses that protect and rebuild reputations. These lessons have shaped my approach to public relations, guiding me to develop strategies that are thoughtful, responsive, and results-driven.

Effective communication is key to building strong brands. What are your top three tips for crafting compelling narratives that resonate with target audiences?
Effective communication is at the heart of building strong brands and crafting compelling narratives that resonate with target audiences requires strategy, empathy, and creativity. Here are my top three tips:
1. Know Your Audience Deeply
Go beyond basic demographics like age or location. To truly connect, understand your audience’s values, interests, pain points, and how they consume information. The more granular your knowledge, the more relevant and personalized your messaging can be. Ask yourself: What motivates them? What challenges do they face? Tailoring your narrative to align with these insights creates messages that feel personal and meaningful.
2. Lead with Impact and Curiosity
The first few seconds are critical. Start with a powerful hook an eye-opening statistic, a thought-provoking question, a vivid anecdote, or a striking visual. Capture your audience’s attention immediately by sparking curiosity and encouraging them to want more. Frame your narrative around a challenge, a promise, or a mystery that engages their imagination and emotional investment.
3. Use Emotion and Storytelling Techniques
Facts alone rarely inspire action paint vivid pictures using descriptive language, sensory details, and emotional appeals. Create a compelling story arc with conflict, rising action, a climax, and resolution. Stories that evoke emotion and human connection are more memorable and persuasive, helping audiences see themselves within the narrative and feel personally invested in its outcome.
These tips, when combined, help transform information into engaging, relatable, and action-inspiring stories powerful tools for any brand seeking to connect authentically with its audience.
