Can you share some insights into your background and what inspired you to enter the luxury branding industry in Nigeria?
My friends and family always called me the ‘Soft Life Connoisseur,’ and I decided to turn that into a business. With a background deeply rooted in advertising and brand management, I studied these fields in South Africa. Initially, I worked as a paralegal in a law firm. Shortly after I moved back to Nigeria, I discovered a gap in the market while trying to settle in. There were very few stores, and none carried Egyptian thread-country sheets; the only available option was 100% cotton sheets at the time, which lacked the quality I had seen in South Africa. My curiosity grew, and the more research I conducted, the more fascinating it became, realizing that this could be my new reality.

I got drawn to hospitality when I observed the high-quality and beautiful home essentials stores in South Africa during the course of my undergrad. I would spend hours window shopping, feeling the different textures of the fabrics, learning about the different qualities, and about the unique designs. When I moved back to Nigeria, I didn’t find any stores selling that kind of quality, so I decided to start a business to cater to this need.

Maison Valor started in December 2019. When COVID hit, so many businesses were experiencing difficulties, and I was really worried, but surprisingly, Maison Valor flourished! I think this was because people had to be at home 24/7. They now understood the importance of making your house, the place you stay the most, feel like a safe space. I also got a lot of recommendations, quite a number of people found it surprising that they could get such great quality here in Nigeria without having to order from outside the country. This period really expanded my client base.

I strongly believe in the power that quality living, good sleep, and scenic decor have on our health. I know many people pay attention to just the exterior or living room decor of their homes, but your bathroom and bedroom are just as important because we spend a lot more time there. The quality of your sheets, such as the thread count and the material, the softness of your mattress, and even the color scheme of your room all go a long way. Maison Valor is my vision to blend international standards of quality, luxury, and elegance with our rich Nigerian cultural heritage.

It’s been over four years of building Maison Valor, share some of the key experiences or influences that has shaped your journey as an entrepreneur so far.
Building Maison Valor these past years has been a continuous learning process. I’m constantly researching and networking.

My travel experience plays a vital role here as it expands my mindset. I network a lot to build quality relationships with other leaders in my industry. I’m also constantly taking feedback from my customers to help me understand their needs and serve them better.

How do you believe well-designed spaces contribute to overall well-being and creativity?
Design plays a very big role in our daily lives. The way you arrange your furniture, the scents you fill your house with, the color you paint your room, and even the furniture and decor pieces you choose for a room all have an impact on your well-being and creativity.

A thoughtfully designed space can evoke a sense of calm and relaxation, which is essential for mental and physical well-being. Having an aesthetically pleasing and well-organized living space can increase productivity, reduce stress, and promote a general sense of happiness and contentment.

For example, using white or soft, neutral colors in a bedroom can promote calmness and clear thinking. It also creates a serene environment that reduces stress and enhances relaxation, which is particularly important for restful sleep. On the other hand, using soft lighting, elegant fixtures, and soothing scents in your bathroom can turn a simple daily routine into a rejuvenating experience, contributing positively to your mental health and sense of well-being.

What role does interior design play in enhancing the user experience of luxury products?
Interior decor plays a crucial role in enhancing the user experience of luxury products. It creates an immersive environment where every detail complements the product, elevating its appeal and functionality.

For instance, our luxury bath decor isn’t just about the products themselves but also about how they integrate into a beautifully designed bathroom setting. The ambiance, lighting, and overall aesthetic work together to create a cohesive and luxurious experience that customers can indulge in.
