Youtopia Beauty has carved out a unique space in the beauty industry, especially for African women. Can you tell us about the moment you realised there was a gap in the market, and how that led to the creation of your brand?
The idea came after struggling with severe acne post-childbirth and realizing the lack of products for melanin-rich skin in Nigeria. I often had to order products abroad, facing delays and uncertainty. This inspired me to create Youtopia Beauty—a curated online store offering high-performance solutions tailored to African skin. Our focus is on high-quality products that perform well for our skin types and our lifestyles. Youtopia Beauty is built on the idea of helping every African woman feel seen, confident, and empowered in her own skin, using products that are scientifically formulated to meet her needs.
Youtopia Beauty isn’t just a retail store; it’s a movement dedicated to empowering African women. How does this philosophy influence your business decisions, from product selection to customer engagement?
We focus on products specifically for melanin-rich skin and prioritise building a community. Feedback from our customers guides our decisions, and we educate women on proper skincare. At the heart of Youtopia Beauty is the mission to make African women feel seen, heard, and valued. Every decision we make is driven by the goal of empowering our community with products that not only cater to their needs but truly work.
After being away from the media spotlight for a while, what led you to take that break, and how has the time away influenced your personal and professional outlook?
I stepped back to prioritise my well-being and reflect on Youtopia’s direction. During this time, I gained valuable clarity about the direction I want to take with Youtopia Beauty. This period of self-reflection has been transformative, helping me to realign my vision and set more meaningful goals for the company.
I now feel reinvigorated and equipped to tackle the challenges ahead. I’m grateful for the time I took, as it has not only strengthened my commitment to Youtopia but has also deepened my understanding of the importance of mental well-being in leadership. I want to emphasise a culture of wellness within my team and inspire others in the industry to prioritise their health as well.
Many people admire your youthful appearance and fitness. What are your secrets to staying so fit and looking so young, especially while managing a busy career?
I prioritise clean eating, regular exercise, and a consistent skincare routine. Self-care is holistic for me—when I feel good physically, it enhances my productivity and mental well-being.
Balancing family life with running a successful business is no small feat. How do you prioritise both, and what are your strategies for managing work-life balance?
Balancing family life with running a successful business is definitely a challenge, but I’ve found that the key is having a solid support system in place. I have three children, and raising kids is no small feat. Thankfully, I’m surrounded by very supportive family, friends, and incredible staff. Their help allows me to navigate my responsibilities more effectively, ensuring that I can be present for my family while also focusing on my professional commitments. A strong support system and effective time management are also key. I set boundaries and allocate specific time blocks for work, family, and personal time, creating harmony between my roles.
Skincare for women of colour is still an area with many misconceptions. What are some of the biggest myths you’ve encountered, and how do you help educate your audience on the importance of proper skincare for melanin-rich skin?
A common myth is that melanin-rich skin doesn’t need sunscreen—it does. This misconception is dangerous, as melanin does provide some protection, but it doesn’t shield against harmful UV rays, which can lead to skin damage, hyperpigmentation, and even skin cancer. I always emphasise that sunscreen is essential for all skin tones, and that’s why bringing Evy Beauty’s innovative technology to Nigeria was so important to me. Another is that skin bleaching is necessary for even skin tone, which is harmful. We educate women on healthy skincare practices and promote products with beneficial ingredients like niacinamide and antioxidants.
As a businesswoman and beauty expert, what advice do you have for women balancing multiple passions, especially those looking to transition from one career path to another, as you did?
Prioritise your goals, trust your instincts, and seek support from mentors or networks. Transitions take time, so be patient and embrace the process.
How have partnerships and collaborations shaped your career, and why do you believe they are important for women in business today?
Collaboration has been instrumental in my growth, providing opportunities I couldn’t achieve alone. It fosters a sense of community, amplifies voices, and helps women break barriers together.
Mental health and self-care are often discussed alongside beauty today. How do you prioritise your well-being amidst the demands of running Youtopia Beauty, and what advice would you give to women struggling with work-life balance?
I set boundaries, delegate, and carve out time for self-care. My advice: prioritise yourself, surround yourself with a support system, and remember self-care is essential, not a luxury.
Finally, as someone who has achieved remarkable success, what does living your truth mean to you, and how do you continue to stay aligned with your values while growing Youtopia Beauty?
Living my truth means being authentic and grounded in faith. Youtopia Beauty reflects my values of integrity and empowering women. Staying true to myself and my purpose drives everything I do.
