Omowunmi Mabel Adewusi is a distinguished legal and human resources professional with a career spanning over two decades in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. She currently holds the dual roles of General Counsel and Human Resource Director at AXA Mansard Insurance Plc.

In 2011, Omowunmi joined AXA Mansard as General Counsel and Head of Legal, where she has been a key player in managing the legal affairs and company secretariat for the company and its subsidiaries. Her leadership was crucial during AXA’s acquisition of Guaranty Assurance Plc, which she navigated with precision and expertise.

Her role expanded in 2016 to include the position of Human Resource Director, where she spearheaded significant initiatives, including revamping the performance management system, implementing an eLearning culture, restructuring the compensation framework, and introducing an Actuarial Developmental Program.

Omowunmi’s leadership and strategic insight have led to numerous achievements for AXA Mansard, including winning the prestigious CIPM “HR Best Practice Award” in the insurance sector. In addition to her responsibilities at AXA Mansard, she was appointed as a non-executive director on the board of AXA Mansard Health Limited in 2021. Omowunmi, Can you share a bit about your professional background with our readers?
I have over two decades of experience in the financial services and telecommunications sectors. I currently serve as the General Counsel and Human Resource Director at AXA Mansard Insurance. My journey has been marked by significant milestones, including leading strategic country-wide HR initiatives, resolving legal cases, and overseeing the company’s acquisition by AXA in 2014.

With over two decades of experience in the financial services and telecommunications sectors, what have been the most defining moments in your career that have shaped your journey?
One of the most defining moments was the acquisition of Mansard Insurance by AXA. Navigating this complex transaction and ensuring a smooth transition was a significant achievement. Additionally, leading various strategic HR initiatives that had a profound impact on the company’s overall people outlook has been incredibly rewarding.

You were recently recognized as one of only three Black women and the sole Nigerian honored at the 2024 CHRO Awards. What does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?
This recognition as a leader of distinction is incredibly humbling and affirming. It highlights the importance of diversity and inclusion in leadership roles. Personally, it motivates me to continue advocating for representation and equity in the workplace. Professionally, it underscores the impact of the initiatives and changes we have implemented at AXA Mansard.

You’ve played a crucial role in driving significant change at AXA Mansard. Can you share one impactful HR initiative you implemented and its positive outcome?
One impactful initiative was the introduction of a comprehensive employee wellness program. This program not only improved employee satisfaction and productivity but also reduced absenteeism and healthcare costs. It fostered a healthier, more engaged workforce.

How has your career journey evolved over the years? What are some of the key lessons you’ve learned along the way?
My career has evolved from focusing solely on legal matters to encompassing broader HR responsibilities. Key lessons I’ve learned include the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and the value of mentorship. Building strong relationships and fostering a collaborative environment are also crucial.

What key lessons from your journey would you like to share with young women and girls facing similar challenges?
Believe in yourself and your abilities. Seek out mentors and allies who can support your growth. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step out of your comfort zone. Remember, your unique perspective is valuable and can drive meaningful change.

What advice would you give to young professionals who are interested in building a career in HR?
Gain a solid understanding of both the legal and human aspects of HR. Stay updated on industry trends and best practices. Develop strong communication and problem-solving skills. Most importantly, be empathetic and approachable, as these qualities are essential in HR.

What projects or initiatives are you currently working on or planning for the future that you’re excited about?
I’m currently working on enhancing our diversity and inclusion programs to ensure a more equitable workplace. Additionally, we’re exploring innovative ways to leverage technology to improve HR processes and employee engagement. These initiatives are aimed at creating a more dynamic and supportive work environment.
